A virtual card is a payment card that exists only as a number — a 16-digit card number, expiry date and security code issued inside an app, with no plastic attached. It spends from a real bank, fintech or crypto account exactly like a physical card, but it can be created in seconds, frozen instantly, capped with spending limits, and replaced free if a merchant is breached. Below, we compare the leading virtual cards on the facts that decide their real cost; our guide to what a virtual card is explains the four types and the trade-offs in full.

Our dataset covers 128 platforms and is built from providers' official fee pages and terms, re-verified in October–November 2026. We compare factual fields — issuance fee, monthly fee, conversion and FX charges, top-up routes, KYC level, card network and regional availability — and we say so plainly when a provider's marketing number (like a "up to 10%" cashback) only applies to a top tier. We do not sell placements: no provider can pay to rank higher on this site. Fees change often, so every review tells you which numbers to re-check before you fund an account.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best virtual card overall?
For most people spending across currencies, Wise — it is free, converts at the mid-market rate, and works in most major markets. For spending stablecoins, KAST's free tier (0% top-up fees and 1.5% USD cashback across 170+ countries) is the strongest offer we track. Our best virtual cards page ranks both against the rest of the field.
Are virtual cards free?
Many are. Virtual issuance is $0 at most providers in our dataset — the costs usually sit in monthly plans, currency conversion, FX markups, top-up fees or ATM charges. A card with a $10 issuance fee and no conversion charges can be cheaper over a year than a 'free' card that takes 2% on every foreign purchase.
Can I get a virtual card without KYC?
Almost every legitimate issuer now requires identity verification — it is a legal requirement for reloadable cards in most jurisdictions. A small number of providers use simplified verification or sell single-load prepaid cards with lighter checks; our low-KYC guide covers what realistically exists and the limits involved.
Which virtual card is best for crypto?
It depends on your priority: KAST for zero-fee stablecoin spending and cashback, MetaMask Card if you refuse to give up self-custody, Binance Card for 0.1% USDC conversion where it is available, and Coinbase or Crypto.com if you already hold funds on those exchanges. See best cards for crypto users.
Is a virtual card safe for online shopping?
Safer than a physical card number, yes. A virtual card can be frozen, replaced instantly, capped with spend limits, locked to one merchant or even set to self-destruct after a single purchase — so a breached merchant never exposes your main account. Our safety and fees guide explains the features that matter.
